Recently, I started to make VR 3D 180 degree recordings with a VUZE XR camera from HumanEyes.com. Below are some of the recordings I made and published on YouTube. The best way to view the videos in 3D VR180 is to use the YouTube VR app on your VR headset. The videos can also be watched on a mobile device or desktop; just move your phone or mouse cursor (while pressing left mouse key) to explore the space a bit further while the video plays.

I plan to make more recordings of animals and also some inside and outside scenes to get a sense of optimal parameters for recording. At a later stage, I aim to integrate such recordings into Virtual Reality environments. And I’m wondering how 3D 180 recordings in front of a green screen can be used for such purposes. I have some experience with green screen recordings, but only in 2D applications (see my Teaching videos)

Hardware and software

Oculus Quest 2 My first VR experiences were on a Oculus Rift S. I now have an Oculus Quest 2, which is a great improvement over the Rift S in several ways: [1] Much higher resolution resulting in a sharp picture. [2] Can work stand-alone. You do not need a computer to play apps. [3] Although in beta, you can use your own hands rather than the controllers in the VR environment. This would be ideal to help novice VR users move around and manipulate objects in VR.

Adobe Premiere Pro Great video editing software! A cool feature called Adobe Immersive Environment allows you to edit your VR video on your VR headset. No more guessing what it will look like, you can see and edit the video in VR!

VUZE XR Dual VR camera Great and relatively cheap camera to record 3D 180 or 360 degrees in 4K (@30 or 60FPS) or 5.7K (@30FPS).

However, as you can see below, 4K is not enough to make detailed recordings. For that, you need an 8K camera.

Also, the lenses are quite sensitive to scratches. So if not in use, always store your VUZE XR safely in its pouch. My first VUZE XR was lethally damaged when I transported it in a bag instead of in its pouch. These camera’s cannot easily be repared and there are no spare parts (replacements) available.

Recording the Prinses Beatrix Sluis in Nieuwegein. Some more editing done, including adding text, arrows, pictures, speeding up the video, and modify the sound.

Observe the calm and inquisitive nature of cows in a meadow. At first, they are a bit scared of our presence. After a while, their curiosity takes over and they cautiously begin to explore our camera. Enjoy!
